Why I like Video-Games

The german ‘Mirko Mushoff’ created a short movie in which he explains why he plays computer games. And since it annoys me so much, how people think watching tv shows all day or watching other people do sports is something ‘better’ to do with the time. I translated the important part to english:

When someone talks to me about video games, I feel like I’m at the alcoholics anonymous:

  • ‘When did you read a book the last time?’
  • ‘Do a little sports sometime!’
  • ‘What is playing video games good for?’
    - How often have I heard this senctence?

Counter question: What are the books good for you are reading? Why are you interested in art or music? And why are you playing tennis, badminton, soccer or chess?

I know why: Because books tell you stories. Because art and music stimulates your creativity. Because images tell you something. And because winning and playing and the strategy behind it is fun.
And because of this reasons I like video games.

Also, I think most of the people not playing video games would like them if it weren’t for their ignorance. I should write a similar post about listening to rap-music, but at a different time.

Movie-Motivation for a Coding All-Nighter

Of course you could pull of a all-nighter without special motivation. After all, it’s you, right? But it’s way more fun when getting in the right mood. As wrong, stupid and ridiculous hacking and programming scenes in movies may be, I still find them motivating. Maybe I see coding all the night still too romantic, but I got a few clips for you. I’m missing some in this post, but it’s hard to find the clips. I should make a supercut. What do you think is missing? Please tell me! :)
So watch a few clips, grab a beer and an energy-drink, kick in some music and write some badass code! :)

Google +1 to RSS with Yahoo Pipes

Image representing Pipes as depicted in CrunchBase

When Google removed the sharing feature from Google Reader in november 2011, I wanted to use the g+1 button instead, like it was intended by google. The biggest problem is, that google plus doesn’t offer a rss stream of +1 recommendations. So I built a Yahoo Pipe to transform any given +1 stream into a rss feed. You can create your own by just entering your google plus id into my pipe here: +1 to rss pipe

This is my G+1 RSS-Stream, created from the +1 page where I share stuff all the time. Be sure to kick this into your rss reader. ;)

About Yahoo Pipes

With Yahoo Pipes you can reformat any content on the internet. For example, here is how the pipe for the +1 to rss conversion looks like:

After Google Reader – Three Days feedly.com

On the 14th of march I got up and booted my computer like every day. First click on the google reader tab. At first I thought this was some kind of joke, there was a pop-up telling me the reader is gonna be offline in juli. Well to be honest I wasn’t that sad, putting some of my interests out of the hand of google sounds like a good idea and I was excited to find alternatives, after all this is the RSS standard, so there has to be alot of alternatives, right? But lets talk about feedly.

The first moments using feedly were awesome, everything seemed so new, customizable and nice to look at. I really liked it. I installed the android app, which was also awesome, it seemed like everything was better then before. Until I wanted to recommend the first article (I do this via G+). The button did nothing at all. This is where all the confusion started.

Literature Review: Personalization of Web Applications

I really don’t think this is interesting for a lot of people on my blog. But since I worked alot on this paper I want to post it. It’s an literature review about the personalization of the web. Abstract:

Since the first attempts for personalized systems, many different approaches and techniques have been established. With the rapid increase of available user information through social networks, web personalization has made huge progress in the last years. There are always new challenges regarding technological solutions, user behavior and privacy issues, as well as important social aspects. This literature review illustrates the current thoughts on all of those topics by combining the statements of different and up-to-date research papers. It also informs about the basic concepts and processes of web personalization. After seeing this paper without any prior knowledge the reader should have a good basic understanding of the complex.

Mobile App – Project Idea

Today I’ve written down an idea for a mobile application. I’ll probably implement it in the next few weeks for my studies at the LNU in sweden. What do you guys think? Already exists? Bad idea?

Introduction

‘MeetMe’ will be a mobile application, that helps people to find each other in an real outdoor environment. The use-cases for the application vary and include but are not limited to:

  • Two persons lost each other, for example in a theme park.
  • A person would enjoy some company, for example in a cafe.
  • The user wants to invite somebody for a given time in the future, for example for lunch in 30 minutes.

The main benefit this application offers is a simple, fast and good looking solution for quick meetings. It replaces long direction instructions in conversations with a touch on the smartphone.

Old DVS Sneakers

Nothing to see, just old shoes here. I am the kinda guy, that always has one pair of shoes until they are no longer wearable. I enjoyed them so much, and I also like the ‘destroyed’ look they have now. All Pictures in this Google-Folder. (CreativeCommons of course)

DayZ

Things I Like – “Dick Figures”

Hab mal zwei besonders gute Folgen eingebunden.
